One of the most important aspects of life in today's multifaceted world is finding focus. There are so many distractions and often people (friends, family, coworkers, etc.) that pull us in several directions.

Finding focus can be extremely difficult, which is why I've taken some time to dive into research surrounding best practices for a focused mind. The following is what I've found:

#1 - You Can Train Your Brain to Focus

A 2015 study took 4,715 adults and had them focus 15 minutes per day, five days per week, on brain training activities. It was discovered that brain training games can make a huge impact.

Soduko, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, memory games, chess, and other puzzles can help train your mind to pay attention to the present moment and what needs to be done at any given time.

Another important study in 2014 found that puzzles and games are extremely important for older adults, as sometimes memory and concentration decline with age.

After 10 years, participants in the study who completed 12-14 sessions of cognitive training experienced better cognition, processing skills, and memory.

#2 - Better Sleep

Better sleep has also been proven to help both adults and children focus better.

It's best to aim for between 7-8 hours of sleep. Lack of sleep has been linked to slower brain processing and poorer than normal memory.

#3 - Eat Powerful Mind Boosting Foods

Eating nutrient-rich whole foods is very important. Your body craves foods that contain omega-3 fatty, (like salmon, nuts, and flaxseed), vitamin D, blueberries, and fiber-rich veggies.

When naturally occurring flavonoids in food are consumed, they instantly activate an enzyme in your body that stimulates the flow of oxygen and blood to your brain. This helps boost focus and memory, while creating the perfect foundation for learning new things.

#4 - Get Into Nature and Exercise

Getting into nature is also amazing for boosting your concentration. Make time to get out every single day, even if for 15-20 minutes.

According to a 2014 study, it was discovered that even a plant in our workspace can increase concentration levels and productively, while helping to keep the air in the environment cleaner. Imagine what basking in the sun and breathing in fresh air as it rattles the treas can do for your focus and overall health.

#5 - Start a meditation Practice

In order to fully function and find your bliss, quieting your mind is a must.

A meditation practice can do wonders to help you wake up and shake off a jumbled mind.

Try meditation at least for 10 minutes a day, and you can expect to see a world of difference.

If you need a great little meditation to start with, try this one. It's a great introduction and guide that can be used any time you'd like.
