Taking care of my skin is an important part of my life — especially living in Southern California where the elements can be a bit harsh. Having grown up at the beach, my skin has seen tons of sun and the Santa Ana winds can be extremely drying.
I'm lucky enough to have found the most amazing skin expert on the planet. Kat Kakar of Derma Beauty Aesthetics in Irvine, California is a miracle worker and wonderful educator on properly caring for skin.
I recently visited her, and she was gracious enough to answer some key questions surrounding best practices. The following is her response:
What should we know about facials?
It's important to understand that not every facial is created equally, and honestly, I don't think they should all be.
The reason? The skin can change from day to day depending on lifestyle changes, weather and climate changes, and hormonal fluctuations.
How does your process work?
Every appointment starts with a skin analysis and a conversation regarding day to day lifestyle changes/ weather and climate changes since our last appointment visit.
No matter which route we take in an appointment, every treatment starts with a thorough double cleanse to remove all makeup, moisturizer, and/or sunscreen.
A second cleanse is done with an Ultrasonic Cleansing device. This will help gently exfoliate and reduce congestion using ultrasound waves.
Once we have thoroughly cleansed the skin, we make sure it is completely dry and squeaky clean, we begin dermaplaning to remove dead skin and villus on the skin.
Also, it preps the skin to receive the serums we will be infused into the skin during the treatment.
To best help you understand how we work with our custom facials, we're going to dive into how we work with Casey's skin:
Once dermaplaning is complete, we begin STEP 1 of the HydraFacial Treatment.
For Casey's customized facial, we begin with the blue tip and Activ Serum option, we gently exfoliate the skin. Face, neck, and chest can be added during this option. This will prep the skin for the next step.
STEP 2
Switching to the teal tip and adding the Glysal Booster (a mixture of Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid), we place this serum all over the face concentrating on the T Zone. This will help loosen the debris, blackheads, and whiteheads in the pores. This will prep the skin for the next step.
STEP 3
Using the Beta HD serum and removing the Glysal Booster, we begin the extraction phase of the treatment. Literally everyone’s favorite part! This is the junk removal process of the treatment. Removes blackheads, whiteheads, debris, and toxins from the pores.
Step 4
Once we are done with the extraction part of the treatment, we will apply a gel-based mask for Casey. This helps calm any inflammation and redness on the skin while hydrating it.
We will cover her with the Hyperbaric Oxygen Dome and either Blue or Red LED Therapy Light. The Oxygen Dome will help heal the skin cells, oxygenate the skin cells, rejuvenate the skin, create an anti-microbial environment and give it a very healthy glow
Step 5
Once removed we will switch to a clear tip and choose the Antiox Plus Serum option. This is the final step of the HydraFacial Treatment. This portion of the treatment is packed with peptides, antioxidants, and hydration. Using a kiss and twist method we apply this all over the face neck and chest. This will fill in any fine lines and leave the skin with a healthy glowing complexion.
The last step to the entire treatment is applying the correct skincare for post-treatment skin that is specific to Casey’s skin type.
We typically start off with a Hyaluronic Acid serum such as IS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum, Skin Better Alto Defense Serum packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients to calm redness in the skin, Skin Better Trio Moisturizer to lock in hydration and plump fine lines, Sente Illumine Eye Cream to revive and hydrate the eye area, and finally, finish off with Colorescience Sunforgettable Face Shield SPF 50.

Casey, I envy you and your beautiful family; and for me on the outside looking in, the “fantasy” life that you live. I believe that you are an amazing woman and importantly an incredible mother. I follow you as well as your new luvey.com site. I am 70 years old and enjoy both tremendously. However, I can never afford to have your same skin treatments.
